Why You Are Mentally Capable

Mentally Capable

We are mentally capable, I am a photographer and I have Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I share my photography with the world to inspire individuals like myself; people who struggle with self worth, value and purpose. I want to show these individuals that we have the capacity to follow our dreams just like anyone else. I want to help reduce the stigmatism’s associated with Mental Heath Disorders.

These disorders are so difficult to live with;

  • It’s waking every morning with the world spinning and the weight of it pressing behind your eyes, deep within your skull.
  • It’s memory loss, where the simplest words fall away; they are replaced by a yearning desire and a sense of profound loss for something you can’t describe.
  • It’s all just sound on top of sound, voice on top of voice whirling around your mind and never giving you peace.
  • It’s self loathing and fatigue, and weight gain or weight loss, and confusion.
  • It’s people judging, the unseen tears, silent screams of agony, and darkened rooms that we trap ourselves within.
  • It’s hiding under covers and curling into a ball at the bottom of the shower.
  • It’s knowing things will get better but for how long?
  • It’s always changing and words on a page cannot fully tell the stories that every disordered person goes though.

These disorders are merely obstacles that we must overcome; some more often than others, but none the less we are to overcome them. We are mentally capable, just as the rest of the world, to following our dreams. We can’t give up when the demons knock at the door otherwise we are giving in to them. We were meant to shine through the darkness as beacons of light to others that are living in that very same darkness. Who better to help someone stuck in that hurt than an individual who has been through it and will undoubtedly go through it again themselves?

Sometimes we have to take days off because our minds have made it impossible for us to see any hope at all. This is why it is important to have a good support system, either in person, phone or online. So that we can keep being reminded and keep reminding others to reignite the flame that keeps us going when it is so hard to see for ourselves. Even when your hope is gone and you’re hurting that bad, you are still mentally capable of making it through, especially with a support system. We may not be able to put an end to our disorders but we can choose to not let our disorders end us. We are so much stronger than we give ourselves credit for, we are mentally capable.

All throughout history, we have seen people with mental disorders become something great. Some of the most genius minds were considered mad. I believe they were always great, it just took them first believing in themselves before the rest of the world would believe in them as well.

I have dedicated this website that showcases my work to inspire and encourage not only others like myself but the rest of the world! It takes an emotional toll on me every time I write a blog post or share one of my pictures online; due to my own demons and insecurities. I am constantly having to look deep inside myself or to my support system for reassurance. So that I can overcome my fears of not being good enough, or feeling like everything I do is all for nothing. I am constantly needing to remind myself or be reminded that I am Mentally Capable. I have value and purpose; I may not be the best photographer, but I am the best me!

I’d like to hear what you have to say on this topic; Share this post with the #MentallyCapable to start the conversation.
